In the 19th century, the South China Sea was bustling with European merchant ships, and the size of pirates gradually increased as the size of maritime trade increased. The pirates were a group of criminals who wandered in waters beyond the government's control and looted fishing boats and merchant ships. It would have been difficult to give them a sense of belonging and a pirate identity without any categories of community members, such as blood, local and academic ties. This research focuses on the "SanPoShen" worshipped by pirates, and tries to analyze when they perform religious ceremonies and what the influence religion has had on the pirate world." For this reason, three types of texts were analyzed. The first is "Jing Hai Fun Ji", written by Yuan Yong-Lun of the Qing Dynasty. The second is "The Journal of three Voyages along the Coast of China in 1831, 1832, &1833" by Charles Gutzlaff, a Protestant missionary. Third, the memoirs of Richard Glasspole, Fanny Loviot, who was abducted by pirates. The pirates did not leave a record of themselves because they were low class and a group of criminals. Therefore, this article attempts to analyze the role and meaning of religion in the pirate world by recreating the religious consciousness of the departure, enlistment, daily life, and fighting of pirates in the 19th century through the records of "Jing Hai Fun Ji", missionary Gutzlaff, and kidnapped foreigners. So far, there has been little research on pirates and religions. Starting with this paper, we hope to continue to research the religion and culture of pirates.
